Biography

Christine (Chris) Bearchell was one of the first six directors of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives and held many important roles during Canada's liberation movement. In 1975 the Committee to Defend John Damien was established and Bearchell was chairperson. In June 1976 Toronto Gay Alliance Toward Equality (GATE) approved the formation of a lesbian caucus, and elected Bearchell as the first woman of its executive body. She contributed to a weekly column called "Dykes" in the Body Politic. Bearchell was one of five representatives who argued for the inclusion of sexual orientation protection in the proposed Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. In 1981 she was awarded a certificate of appreciation for her civil rights work by Toronto Metropolitan Community Church.
