Description

September 22 Saskatoon Doug Wilson, a graduate student in the Department of Educational Foundations at the University of Saskatchewan, was told by James Kirkpatrick, dean of the University's College of Education, that he would not be allowed to go into the school system to supervise practice teachers because of his public involvement with the gay liberation movement. At that time, Wilson was the first vice-president of the Gay Community Centre of Saskatoon and had been trying to start a gay academic union at the University. Although he was qualified to do the job, Wilson was disqualified solely on the basis of his sexual orientation. Wilson protested, but the decision was upheld by University of Saskatchewan president R.W. Begg. Members of the Department of Educational Foundations immediately protested the decision and a Committee to Defend Doug Wilson was established. The Wilson case generated much support from groups and organizations in Saskatchewan (and elsewhere) and considerable coverage in the media.
