Biography

Charles Hill was an activist in Ontario's homophile movement. In 1971 he was part of the first large-scale gay rights protest in Canada, We Demand, on Parliament Hill. In April of that year he also took part in a CBC radio debate with other activists against Dr. Daniel Cappon, who believed that homosexuals were dangerous because they attracted others to homosexuality. In 1972 he became curator at the National Gallery as well as the second president of Gays of Ottawa (GO). In 1975, Hill and Ron Dayman met with Ottawa Mayor Lorry Greenberg to discuss police discrimination, and possible civil rights protections for gay municipal employees. Hill and Dayman also appeared before the Ontario Press Council, claiming that the Ottawa Citizen had engaged in a sensationalist anti-gay witch-hunt.
