February London, England; Toronto Jane Rule's first novel, The Desert of the Heart, was published by Seeker & Warburg in England and Macmillan of Canada. An American edition was released by World Publishing of New York later in 1964. A classic of lesbian literature concerning the relationship between a divorcee and a free-spirited woman in Reno, Nevada, during the 1950s, The Desert of the Heart has been reprinted many times, and was adapted by Donna Deitch into the film Desert Hearts in 1985.
