Biography
Albert Johnson was a Jamaican-Canadian who was shot and killed by Toronto Police in his home on Aug. 26, 1979. The police claimed that they acted in self-defense, mistaking a garden tool Johnson was holding for an axe. Thousands of black people, as well as gay men and lesbians, marched through Toronto streets in protest of police handling of minority issues as a result. In September 1979, two officers were charged with manslaughter in Johnson's death.
