Description

May 15 Toronto In her inaugural speech to the Ontario Legislature as labour critic, Sheila Copps (Lib–Hamilton Centre) surprised everyone by vowing to personally move the sexual orientation amendment to Bill 7 in committee, and if defeated there she would also move it at third reading. Columnist Claire Hoy of the Toronto Sun dismissed Copps as "the new champion of depravity." On May 19, 1981, the amendment was actually moved by Richard Johnston (NDP–Scarborough West) during the second reading of the bill, and Bill 7 was sent to the Standing Committee on Resources Development for detailed debate before a final vote.
