Description

September Toronto A chapter of the Gay Academic Union (GAU) was officially formed at the University of Toronto. The first executives included Albert Gedraitis, John Alan Lee, Vicky Pullam, and R.T. Wallace. Dorothy Broderick and John Alan Lee had acted as Canadian contacts with the GAU in New York since 1974. An organizing committee (including Barry Adam, Clarence Barnes, John Alan Lee, Michael Lynch, and Jim Quixley) met in May 1975 to formulate goals, which included the "creation of a visible gay presence on campus, an end to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender, the promotion of gay studies and the improvement of library holdings on gay subjects." The Toronto GAU was seen as an independent group with fraternal ties to the GAU in the United States.
