Biography
Arthur Eggleton was an Alderman of Toronto who during the Toronto Yonge street "clean-up" following the murder of Emanuel Jaques expressed concern that the "clean-up" might infringe on the rights of some groups. In November 1980 he was elected mayor. Following the Feb. 5, 1981 bathhouse raids, Eggleton accepted a report from Toronto Police Chief Jack Ackroyd that claimed the police had not used excessive force in the raid. Eggleton was indecisive throughout 1981 when it came to lesbian and gay policy changes, being in favour of the Bill 7 amendments, and against the Bruner Report resolutions (fearing that these recommendations would "give special status or suggest special status to the gay community").
