Description

May 6 Ottawa A delegation from the Family Allowance Protest went to Ottawa. The delegation was composed of Wages Due Lesbians and the Toronto Wages for Housework Committee. The initial plan was to present 10,000 signatures from a petition as well as a brief titled "In Defence of the Family Allowance" to Marc Lalonde, Minister of Health and Welfare, but he was "too busy" to meet with the delegation. The assistant to the Deputy Minister and some policy makers met with the delegation instead. Present at the meeting was Frances Gregory, speaking for the mothers of Canada about the need for retaining and increasing the family allowance and against their plan for a guaranteed annual income. Florence Sims attended for welfare mothers, Liz Janzen for childless women, and Ellen Agger spoke for lesbian women both about the needs for the family allowance and other money for independence, and about the increased attacks on lesbians rights to keep the custody of their children.
