Description

February 5-7 Montréal A symposium on sexuality held at the McGill University Student Union ballroom heard several panelists discuss aspects of homosexuality. The speakers included Dr. John Southin (on the 1969 Criminal Code amendments), Deborah Thomas, president of Gay McGill, and Dr. Alan Bell of the Institute for Sex Research, Bloomington, Indiana. On February 7, American psychologist Bruno Bettelheim was verbally attacked by members of the audience for his statements regarding homosexuality. Bettelheim told the audience of 500 that "Homosexual relations are always narcissistic — they involve an unconscious search for the self, instead of the other," and that "... homosexuality is based on fear of the other sex."
