Description

August 19-27 Toronto Toronto's first annual Gay Pride Week was organized by CHAT, TGA, and The Body Politic. It was held in late August to celebrate the first anniversary of the "We Demand" march on Ottawa and the third anniversary of the implementation of the changes to Canada's criminal code (Bill C-150). George Hislop, director of CHAT, opened the festival and read letters of support from Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis and Toronto alderman William Kilbourn. Toronto mayor William Dennison had refused to declare Gay Pride Week in Toronto. Several events were planned for the week, and on August 20 more than 400 people held a gay pride picnic on Ward's Island.
