Description

May Québec, Qué. The idea for establishing a homophile organization in Quebec City was first put forward by Patrick Cellier and Father Paul Ouellet, leading to the establishment a year later (May 1973) of the Centre humanitaire d'aide et de liberation (CHAL) as a social, service, and organizing centre for gay men and lesbians. Other early members and organizers of CHAL included Claude Bernard, Pierre Falardeau, and Denise Goyette (founder of Tel-Aide). In the early days CHAL held a gay discussion group with a group of heterosexuals at Ouellet's church, Saint-Roch. On June 8, 1973, CHAL was incorporated, and on September 12, 1973, CHAL'S centre officially opened in the basement of a Franciscan church at 264, rue des Franciscains. By December 1973, CHAL had 106 registered members. (see also October 6-7, 1973.)
