February 12 Ottawa Peter Maloney, who ran as the Liberal party candidate opposite Ontario Attorney-General Allan Lawrence in the October 1971 Ontario provincial election, announced that he was gay during a policy seminar at the annual Liberal Party convention. Maloney made the announcement during a confrontation with Otto Lang, Canada's new Attorney-General and formerly Minister of Manpower and Immigration. Maloney protested the discrimination against gays posed by the Canadian Immigration Act.
