Description

February 2 London, Ont. Twenty students met to discuss the formation of a gay student group at the University of Western Ontario, and to elect officers. Wayne Thompson was appointed the first chairperson of the group. The first general meeting of the UWO Homophile Association (Gay Lib Union) (UWOHA) was held February 8, and was attended by forty people. Subsequent meetings were held weekly during the school year, often at the Grapevine Club, 674 Wellington Road S., and featured guest speakers, discussions, films, and "gay-in" nights at the student pub at Somerville House. By June 1971, official membership in UWOHA stood at almost one hundred, including members from the general community. By late 1973, members from the general community far outnumbered University members. This led in 1974 to the establishment of the Homophile Association of London, Ontario (HALO), an organization for the whole community based off-campus, and the demise of UWOHA.
