October Montréal The inaugural issue of Mainmise, an alternative publication in paperback format, was published. A mouthpiece for the Québécois countercultural movement, Mainmise had several openly gay people on staff, including Jean Basile (pseud, of Jean-Basile Bezroudnoff) and Denis Vanier. Translations of American gay liberation articles appeared in its first two issues; the third issue (February 1971) included an article calling for the establishment of a gay liberation front in Montréal.
