Biography

Paul Godfrey was a Toronto Police Service commissioner. In October 1979 a demonstration of 1500 people protested increased racism and police violence against minority groups, and one of their demands was the resignation of Godfrey and his colleagues. As chairman of the Metro Council of Toronto he stated that his support was for the police, and refused to support a report by aldermen Pat Sheppard and David White recommending an independent inquiry into the February 1981 bathhouse raids. In October 1981 Godfrey publicly claimed that members of the Citizens’ Independent Review of Police Actions were misguided vigilantes.
