Spring Scarborough, Ont. Catalyst Press was launched as a gay press by Ian Young. Young had been involved with Catalyst, a literary magazine produced by graduate English students at the University of Toronto, since early 1969. In the fall of that year, he gained control of the magazine (with Michael Higgins and John Holland). In the wake of Stonewall, Young felt the time was right to transform Catalyst into a small press specializing in books and chapbooks of gay poetry and fiction. Young started the press with no money and virtually no publishing experience. Catalyst's first book publication was Cool Fire: 10 Poems by Ian Young and Richard Phelan (1970). Young was able to publish over thirty titles by Canadian, British, and American writers before the press suspended publication in 1980.
