January 28-29 Downsview, Ont. YUHA sponsored the Ontario Homophile Federation conference "Sexuality and Civil Rights" at York University. Forty people (mostly from Ontario and Quebec) gathered to discuss strategies for gay liberation. The speakers included Jack Baker and Mike McConnell of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who talked on same-sex marriages. Baker, a third-year law student, was president of the University of Minnesota Student Association. McConnell, his lover, had been dismissed from his position as a librarian at the University of Minnesota when his homosexuality became known. At that time, they were engaged in a lengthy legal battle for state recognition of their marriage.
