Biography

Cheryl Freeman was a lesbian who faced harassment in Don Mills, Ontario, from her neighbours and from the Ontario Housing Corporation. In April 1977 she tried to publish an ad in The Don Mills Mirror for a political meeting for gays and lesbians. The paper refused to print the ad because it thought the word "gay" would be offensive to "young hockey players," and Freeman eventually got the ad printed in the Toronto Star, though they changed the word "gay" to "homosexual." She was evicted from her townhouse on April 30, 1978 after her partner Diane Oster moved in with her. She claimed the eviction was due to her sexual orientation.
