Biography

Arthur Maloney was the first Ombudsman of Ontario, sworn in on October 30, 1975. In July, 1977 he presented a brief to the Ontario Legislature, proposing an amendment to the Vital Statistics Act to allow changes in gender designation on birth certificates for those who underwent gender reassignment surgery. This was his second time making the request. His office also spent two years investigating an appeal by the Body Politic, which had been denied funding since it had pending criminal charges. Maloney's office eventually upheld the decision to withhold funding.
