June Montréal The Federation Canadienne des Transsexuels (FCT), the Québec branch of FACT, announced that it would launch a class action suit against the Quebec Medical Insurance Board. Hospitals in the Montréal area refused to perform transsexual operations, which were then only available in the United States at great expense. FCT demanded that the Quebec Medical Insurance Board pay for the cost of these operations in the United States. The Hospital Insurance Act stipulated that if necessary medical services were unavailable in Québec, the cost of insured medical services would be paid in full if the patient was referred to an institution outside of Canada on the written recommendation of two doctors. This was the first class action suit taken on a gay-related issue in Québec.
