January 11 Toronto CBC–TV broadcast the ninety-minute documentary Sharing the Secret: Selected Gay Stories, which had been written by CBC producer John Kastner and his mother, Rose Kastner. The film examined the lives of six gay men and the parents of two of these men, and explored the themes of coming out, self-acceptance, parental reaction to gay children, and sexual lifestyles. Many people in the gay community panned the film for its superficiality and old-fashioned "plea for sympathy" approach. (See also March 2, 1981.)
