Description

May Montréal A transsexual, referred to as " Miss D," filed a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission shortly after being refused service at the Casse Croute Allemande restaurant, 171, rue Ste-Catherine est, solely because of her sexual identity. The owner of the restaurant had said she did not want men dressed as women, or prostitutes, in her restaurant, which was located in the red-light district. The commission ruled in the fall of 1981 that the restaurant owner was guilty of discrimination based on sex and/or sexual orientation, and filed a lawsuit against the owner asking for $1,000 in damages. In April 1982, Provincial Court Judge Pierre Durand awarded the complainant $500 in "moral damages" plus interest and court costs.
