January Ottawa Gays of Ottawa (GO) announced the winners of the first annual Oscar Wilde Awards for Homophobe-of-the-Year for 1976. The national winner was Hugh Poulin (Lib –Ottawa-Centre), for his veto of an educational grant for GO. Charles MacNaughton, chairman of the Ontario Racing Commission, was named in the provincial category for his role in firing John Damien. The local winners (a tie) were Constable Robert Gervais and Sergeant Alain Méthot of the Ottawa Police morality squad.
