March 26 Alberta A provincial election was held in which the Progressive Conservatives won sixty-nine of seventy-five seats. In the period leading up to the election, members of GATE (Edmonton) questioned candidates about gay civil rights and the inclusion of sexual orientation in provincial human rights legislation, GATE (Edmonton) also sent the brief "Homosexuals: A Minority without Rights" to all candidates. Fifty-five percent of the candidates who returned the questionnaire (mostly NDP candidates) supported including sexual orientation in the legislation. During the campaign, gays were vilified by the president of the Alberta Liberal party. Jack Pickett.
