Description

March 15 Thunder Bay, Ont. The Mona Lisa Tavern's plate glass door was kicked in and owner Michael Agostinelli was faced by a hostile crowd of youths. Agostinelli discharged a gun and one person in the crowd was hit in the leg. Located at 505 Simpson Street, the Mona Lisa had operated as a gay bar since 1972. It was subjected to continual harassment by people who did not want a gay bar in the area, and had been broken up on numerous occasions while the Thunder Bay police refused to act. In 1978, Agostinelli pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully causing bodily harm and was fined $500. The bar was forced to close because of the incident and charges.
