Description

July Montréal A proposal was drafted for a Gay Social Services Project to be operated under the Family Service Association at the Ville-Marie Social Service Centre, 5 Weredale Park, Westmount. The Project would formalize the services to lesbians and gay men that the Family Service Association had been providing since 1973. It became operational by September 1975 and by mid-1976 had expanded through additional funding. The Project provided a variety of services to the anglophone gay community, including a gayline, individual and group counselling, community relations groups, a foster children's project, a gay youth group, and educational seminars. It was coordinated by Miriam Boghen and employed two gay social workers (Bruce Garside and Joanne Stitt) as well as about forty male and female volunteers recruited from the gay community. Although it was meant to serve all members of the community, there were some complaints early on that the Project was male-oriented and did not serve lesbians well.
