Description
May St. John's The Community Homophile Association of Newfoundland (CHAN) was founded as a social and political group for lesbians and gays in Newfoundland. CHAN'S first meeting was held in late May 1974 after Norman Hay of GO appeared on an open-line radio program on CJON. Thirteen people (seven women, six men) met with Hay and decided to establish a social group that would meet Thursday nights in members' homes, CHAN published the newsletter Aboutface, and established a branch in Corner Brook by 1975. CHAN was active until 1980.
