January 12 near Victoria, B.C. Two members of GATE (Vancouver) were refused access to visit a gay male prisoner at William Head, a federal penitentiary near Victoria. The inmate wished to make a public statement about conditions for gays at the prison. Although the visitors had met all the required formalities, they were turned back at the gate because they were journalists for Gay Tide and thus required special permission to visit.
