September 26 Hamilton Dr. Charles Socarides, a psychiatrist at the Albert Einstein Centre in New York and the author of The Overt Homosexual (1968), was challenged by members of the audience during a taping of the CBC television programme Under Attack, held at McMaster University. Socarides was one of the prime defenders of the "homosexuals are sick and should be treated" school of psychiatry, and was known for his statement "There is no such thing as a happy homosexual." The program was broadcast on CHCH-TV on December 21,1974.
