Description

July Toronto Bill Ert and Tony Molina filed a request with the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) that they be recognized as a family unit in order to qualify for medical coverage under OHIP'S family plan. Ert and Molina had been legally married at the MCC in Houston, Texas, on October 5,1972. They had moved to Toronto in 1973, were enrolled with OHIP, and had paid the family premium. When Ert was hospitalized, OHIP refused to pay expenses because the couple were both male. Ert and Molina eventually accepted a compromise proposal from OHIP.
