Description

Summer Waterloo, Ont. Operation Socrates Handbook, one of the first education-information publications of the Canadian gay movement, was published by the Waterloo GLM. Seven people (Dennis Findlay, Nancy Hills, Ana MacNeil, Peter McDonald, Margaret Murray, Ed Phillips, and Bob Williams) had worked on the project, which was funded by an Opportunities for Youth grant of $9,290. The Handbook included answers to common questions about homosexuality, several interviews, information on venereal disease, and a reading list. About 4,000 copies of the forty-page booklet were printed and were distributed to high school guidance departments. Several articles and letters appeared later in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record disputing the use of government funds (the OFY grant) to support such projects. (See also November 21,1973.)
