Description
December 15 Washington, D.C. Following three years of lobbying by members of the gay liberation movement, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders. The trustees of the 20,000-member Association also urged an end to private and public discrimination against gays in employment, housing, and other areas, and recommended that state legislatures repeal their "irrational" laws against sodomy or "unnatural" sex acts. Homosexuality, however, would still be classified as a "sexual orientation disturbance (homosexuality)" for people who were dissatisfied with their condition. (See also January 16, 1974.)
