Description

November 18 Montréal GAY (later Gay McGill) held the first of what were to become the most successful community dances in the city. Gay McGill sponsored the dances until the summer of 1973, after which time they were sponsored by AHM/GMA (although still held at McGill). By 1973-74 the McGill dances had become so popular that they may have been the largest regularly held gay dances in the world, attracting up to two thousand people each. Although very successful, the dances were discontinued in April 1975 after the Québec liquor permit board withdrew the group's liquor licence. Gay McGill attempted to revive the dances in the autumn of 1975 but was ultimately unsuccessful.
