Description

May 20, 27 Vancouver Members of GATE (Vancouver) boycotted and picketed the newly renovated Castle Hotel pub after an attempt was made by the management to exclude "obviously gay" men from the premises. The pub had hosted a large gay clientele for twenty years but had shown insensitivity to its gay patrons. During 1971, members of GLF had demonstrated outside the pub and had confronted the owner-manager but were unsuccessful. During the GATE picket, one local taxi company refused to pick up fares at the hotel in a show of solidarity with the demonstrators. The protest was opposed by Dick Rulens and members of the CGAA, who crossed the picket line.
