Description

December 5 Winnipeg The Manitoba provincial government denied private club charters to two gay groups because it didn't want to encourage the proliferation of homosexuality. Attorney-General A.H. Mackling stated that "our concern is that such groups ought not to be clothed with the same rights and respectability as other groups." One of the groups was Happenings, a gay social club operated by the Mutual Friendship Society. Happenings was eventually granted a charter in June 1973.
