June 1-September 24 Toronto CHAT received an Opportunities for Youth grant for $9,000 to help educate the public about homosexuality. The grant, administered through the Canadian Mental Health Association, allowed nine people to operate a telephone counselling service and to work on education programs with church and social groups for a thirteen-week period. This is believed to be the first time in Canada that a gay organization received financial assistance from the federal government.
