May Ottawa The Club Private opened at 227 Laurier Avenue W. as a private club for gay men and lesbians. Operated by Ron Burridge, it was open to males on Fridays and Saturdays, and to females on Thursdays and Sundays. Activities were restricted to conversation and dancing. By January 1972, the club had five hundred members. On December 16, 1972, Club Private was raided by Ottawa morality detectives, who charged Burridge with selling liquor without a licence. Burridge pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence.
