Description

October 23 Vancouver Maurice Flood, chairperson of GATE (Vancouver), attempted to advertise the group's publication Gay Tide in the classified advertising section of the Vancouver Sun. The ad read: "Subs, to GAY TIDE, gay lib paper. $1.00 for 6 issues. 2146 Yew St., Vancouver." The Sun refused to publish the ad. When it failed to reconsider. Flood filed a complaint against the Sun with the B.C. Human Rights Commission on November 15. On November 16, twenty gays picketed the Sun's Pacific Press Building, 2250 Granville Street, in protest. This was the beginning of one of the most famous Canadian legal cases involving gay rights: Gay Alliance toward Equality vs. The Vancouver Sun. (see also November 20,1974, and February 28,1975.)
