July 25 Saskatoon Darlene Case, a lesbian, lost custody of her two children to her ex-husband. She had been granted custody in 1973; this decision was reversed after her ex-husband appealed the case on the basis of the mother's lesbianism. At this time there was no Canadian precedent for a self-declared lesbian or gay man gaining or retaining child custody. In making his ruling. Justice Murdoch MacPherson stated: "It seems to me that homosexuality on the part of a parent is a factor to be considered along with all of the other evidence in the case. It should not be considered a bar in itself to a parent's right to custody." Darlene Case was supported by the Saskatoon Women's Centre, Saskatoon Gay Action, and the Zodiac Friendship Society, among others.
