Biography

Pierre Trudeau was prime minister of Canada from 1968–79 and 1980–84. In 1967 while he was justice minister, he introduced amendments to the Criminal Code that would decriminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults (Bill C-150). The bill came into effect in 1969. He also introduced liberalized laws on divorce and abortion. While prime minister, Trudeau failed to amend the draft bill of a proposed new Canadian constitution, the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation (this change would not be made until 1966).
