Description

September 24 Toronto The first issue of Esprit (October), a national monthly magazine for gay men and lesbians, was published in an edition of 10,000 copies. Published by George Hislop and Peter Maloney and edited by Mary Axten, Esprit was an ambitious seventy-two-page, general-interest magazine. Its intention was "to present to the gay community, and to the community at large, a positive perspective of people who are going places and doing things, who are sometimes gay and sometimes not." Espirit folded in January 1976, after three issues. (see also October 9,1975.)
