November 17 Vancouver At a civic all-candidates meeting sponsored by GATE (Vancouver), Alderman Michael Harcourt acknowledged that police had harassed gay establishments at the end of October. Harcourt said that the raids by policemen and city inspectors during checks for liquor rules violations were "dumb and unneccesary and vicious." This was the first acknowledgement by a public official that police harassment of gays had occurred in Vancouver, MLA Gary Lauk (NDP -Vancouver Centre) said that he would investigate.
