Description

January 11 Montréal The Association homophile de Montréal/Gay Montréal Association (AHM/GMA) held its first general assembly. The AHM/ GMA was organized out of the Centre d'accueil homophile/Gay Community Centre, which had wanted to expand into the social, service, and political spheres, and to involve more people. About ninety percent of the group's charter members attended, many of whom were women. Robert Valise was elected president; the other officers were Danielle Dahan (vice-president), Tony Farebrother (secretary), and Felicity Stevens (treasurer). The AHM/GMA was anxious from the start to balance francophone/anglophone and male/ female elements in the organization but was ultimately unsuccessful — eventually most members were male anglophones. It sponsored a variety of activities: the large drop-in centre located at 3439, rue St. Denis, counselling services, a gayline, a coffee house, a newsletter (Gay-Zette), a civil liberties committee, and the McGill dances. Financial problems fueled by the cancellation of the McGill dances, and internal divisions, led to a series of collapses. The demise of AHM/GMA occurred by February 1976, although a few members were able to continue to operate the gay information phone line Gay Info. (see also May 6,1974, and July 1975.)
