Description

Spring Vancouver Ted North, one of the owners of the August Club, was appointed the first Empress of Vancouver by the court in Portland, Oregon. The court system, a network of drag performers and their admirers, originated in San Francisco. Its purpose was to generate gay community unity and to support charitable causes within the community through the staging of drag shows and balls. The court was not without its detractors; some activists saw it as an anachronism that promoted sexism and discrimination. The Vancouver court was the first to be established in Canada; it eventually evolved into the Dogwood Monarchist Society and Imperial Dogwood Court.
