March 19 Calgary Club Carousel, a private social club owned, operated, and managed by lesbians and gays, officially opened under the umbrella of the Scarth Street Society. The Club became involved in charity and educational work as well as serving as a recreational and social centre for local lesbians and gays. It was immediately popular and had 385 paid members by the end of September 1971. Membership peaked at about 650 in 1972 before beginning a slow decline. Club Carousel closed in 1983.
