Description

June Canada An anti-gay smear campaign was directed against Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and the Liberal Party in the weeks leading up to the June 25 federal general election. In letters mailed across Canada Trudeau was labelled a promoter of sexual deviation and a "beast of Sodom" for his government's support of the decriminalization of homosexual acts as presented in Bill C-150. The campaign was co-ordinated by the ultra-conservative groups the Canadian Intelligence Service (Flesherton, Ont.), the Pilgrims of St. Michael (White Berets; Rougemont, Que.), and the Edmund Burke Society (Scarborough, Ont.).
